DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have revealed who will start on the mound and in the lineup Thursday night as they try to clinch an ALDS win over the Cleveland Guardians.
Manager A.J. Hinch is calling on second-year starter Reese Olson for what will be the biggest game of his career so far.
Olson is on regular rest after pitching in relief during the Tigers' Game 1 loss Saturday in Cleveland. He allowed a home run to Lane Thomas with his first pitch, and that gave the Guardians a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
Olson settled down, though, and gave the Tigers five scoreless innings after the homer. He allowed just two more hits, one walk, and struck out four.
The 25-year-old is coming off a phenomenal regular season, posting a 3.53 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP with 101 strikeouts in 112.1 innings.
But he only threw 9.1 innings after leaving his July 20 start with an injury. He gave up seven earned runs in those three September appearances, good for a 6.75 ERA.
The Tigers are hoping for some length out of Olson following Wednesday’s win. Hinch used six different pitchers, including his top three relievers in Beau Brieske (two innings), Will Vest (1.1 innings), and Tyler Holton (one inning).
Keider Montero started and threw six pitches in one inning. Brant Hurter pitched 3.1 innings, and Sean Guenther got one out.
Olson will be backed by this lineup:
- Parker Meadows, CF
- Kerry Carpenter, DH
- Matt Vierling, RF
- Riley Greene, LF
- Colt Keith, 2B
- Spencer Torkelson, 1B
- Zach McKinstry, 3B
- Trey Sweeney, SS
- Jake Rogers, C
It’s no surprise to see six left-handed hitters in the lineup against Cleveland ace Tanner Bibee, who’s a righty.
Bibee shut down the Tigers in that 7-0 Game 1 win, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just four hits and one walk. He struck out six.
With a win, the Tigers would advance to the American League Championship Series against either the Kansas City Royals or New York Yankees. The Yankees currently lead that series 2-1, with Game 4 on Thursday night in Kansas City.
If the Guardians win, the Tigers will head back to Cleveland for a winner-take-all Game 5, with Tarik Skubal on the mound.
In a perfect world, the Tigers would love to clinch the series at home Thursday and have Skubal available for Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday in New York or Kansas City.
