The nine-year veteran threw a career-high five interceptions through three quarters and the Lions trailed by 10 points.

Instead of wallowing in his mistakes, Goff rallied the Lions to an improbable 26-23 win that was capped by a 52-yard field goal by Jake Bates as time expired.

“I had some unfortunate things early, but I’ve been through a whole lot worse than that,” Goff said. “Mentally, I’ve been to the bottom. Some unlucky plays aren’t going to throw me off my game.”

The Lions improved to 8-1 for the first time since 1954 with their seventh straight victory overall and fifth in a row on the road.

“That was a hard-fought game,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said. “We had to fight our way back in there. I’m proud of the guys. There’s things we’ve got to clean up, but our guys wouldn’t go away. They just wouldn’t go away.”

Detroit trailed 23-7 at halftime after Goff threw three interceptions in the first two quarters. He threw two more picks in the third. Nonetheless, the Lions scored 16 straight points to tie it with about five minutes to go on Bates' 58-yard field goal.

“I just don’t deserve this,” Bates said. “I was a soccer player growing up. I idolized football players in the NFL, and just to be here is surreal. I’m still pinching myself.”

The Texans (6-4) had a chance to take the lead with just under two minutes left, but Ka'imi Fairbairn’s 58-yard try was wide left.

“We didn’t make the plays to win the game ... to win games guys have to step up and make plays and that’s not happening,” Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said.

The Lions became the first team to win when throwing five or more interceptions since Atlanta beat Arizona 23-19 on Nov. 18, 2012, when Matt Ryan was picked off five times.

David Montgomery ran for 3-yard touchdown early in the third, but his run on the 2-point conversion try was stopped, leaving the Lions down 23-13. A 9-yard TD reception by Amon-Ra St. Brown got Detroit within 23-20 early in the fourth quarter.

Goff threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns and Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 71 yards.

C.J. Stroud threw for 232 yards and a touchdown, but he threw two interceptions in the second half as the Texans were shut out after the break to lose for the third time in four games.

“I blame this game on me,” Stroud said. “I’ve got to be better in those moments. When the defense is getting turnovers like they did, we’ve got to be able to reward them with points.”

Goff's five picks were the most by an NFL player since Jameis Winston threw five on Oct. 13, 2019, for Tampa Bay against Carolina.

Goff hadn’t thrown an interception in five games and entered Sunday with just four all season. His previous career high was four in a loss to Chicago while with the Rams on Dec. 9, 2018.

“There’s just these little circumstances that come into play so for me, I’m not going to tell him anything,” Campbell said. “These weren’t ill-advised throws, it just wasn’t our day.”

Rookie Kamari Lassiter led the Texans with two interceptions as they set a franchise record for picks.

Jimmie Ward intercepted Goff on Detroit’s first drive on a ball that was tipped by Jalen Pitre to give Houston the ball at the Detroit 33. The Texans made it 7-0 when Joe Mixon ran 8 yards for a touchdown.

A 34-yard field goal by Fairbairn extended the lead to 10-0 with about two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Detroit cut the lead to 10-7 on a 20-yard touchdown reception by Sam LaPorta.

The Texans were up by 6 when Denico Autry hit Goff’s arm as he threw and the ball fell into the hands of Henry To’oTo’o to give Houston possession at the Detroit 36.

But the Texans couldn’t move the ball after that and settled for Fairbairn's 29-yard field goal that made it 16-7 with about four minutes left in the first half.

Houston extended the lead to 23-7 when Stroud found John Metchie III for a 15-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left in the second quarter. It was the first career touchdown for Metchie, who missed his entire rookie season in 2022 undergoing treatment for leukemia.

Goff threw his third interception when Lassiter picked off his desperation throw on the last play of the first half.

Davis intercepted Stroud on the first play of the second half. But Lassiter grabbed his second interception of the game three plays later.

After Montgomery's touchdown, Detroit's Carlton Davis III leapt in front of Tank Dell in the end zone for his second interception. Goff threw his fifth pick two plays later, but the Texans couldn't capitalize and were forced to punt.

Injuries

Lions: LaPorta injured the AC joint in one of his shoulders but Campbell said he doesn't know how significant of an injury it is.

Texans: DE Will Anderson Jr. missed the game with an ankle injury. ... WR Nico Collins didn’t play after being activated from injured reserve Saturday. … Lassiter left in the third quarter with a concussion.

Lions: Host Jacksonville next Sunday.

Texans: Visit Dallas on Monday, Nov. 18.

<![CDATA[CeeDee Lamb throws shade after losing ball in sun as Jerry Jones bristles over curtains]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/11/ceedee-lamb-throws-shade-after-losing-ball-in-sun-as-jerry-jones-bristles-over-curtains/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/11/ceedee-lamb-throws-shade-after-losing-ball-in-sun-as-jerry-jones-bristles-over-curtains/Mon, 11 Nov 2024 05:41:18 +0000CeeDee Lamb was unhappy about losing a ball in the sun on an incompletion that helped keep Dallas from scoring a go-ahead touchdown in the first half of a 34-6 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones was perturbed that the sun was brought up as an issue once again in his $1.2 billion retractable roof stadium, which has glass doors on either end.

AT&T Stadium has an unusual east-west alignment from end zone to end zone, as opposed to most venues being north-south. On clear days, the sun shines in the windows on the west side during the first half of games that kick off in the afternoon.

Lamb, Dallas' All-Pro receiver, was looking into to sun in the second quarter while open on a crossing route in the end zone when a throw from Cooper Rush went behind him and he never adjusted to the ball.

Lamb then pointed to his eyes, and was making similar gestures on the sideline during another frustrating home loss for the Cowboys (3-6), who are on a four-game losing streak overall and 0-4 at AT&T Stadium.

“I couldn’t see the ball. Couldn’t see the ball, at all. The sun,” said Lamb, who ended a preseason-long holdout by signing a $136 million, four-year contract extension in late August.

Asked whether the Cowboys should put up curtains on that, Lamb said, “Yes. One thousand percent.”

And on the question of making the suggestion to Jones, Lamb said, “I mean, y’all are doing my job for me right now.”

It has been suggested plenty of times, and Jones has always flatly rejected it. The 82-year-old billionaire angrily rejected it after bringing up the issue unprompted in his post-game session with reporters.

“By the way, we know where the sun is going to be when we flip the coin, so we do know where the damn sun is going to be in our own stadium,” Jones said. “Let’s just tear the damn stadium down and build another one. Are you kidding me?”

While Jones' response could be taken as a criticism of embattled coach Mike McCarthy, Jones said it wasn't.

“Every team that comes in here has the same issues,” Jones said. “They know where the sun is going to be. Every team has the same thing. I'm not saying (it’s on McCarthy). I’m saying the world knows where the sun is. We get to know that almost a year in advance. So someone asked me about the sun. What about the sun? Where’s the moon? We’re fine. But everybody plays in the sun out here.”

The Cowboys are bracing for official word that quarterback Dak Prescott needs season-ending surgery for a torn hamstring. They have lost five in a row at AT&T Stadium, with five turnovers in each of the past two losses.

The curtains, or lack thereof, just add to the angst. The next time they will be an issue is Thanksgiving Day against the New York Giants.

“You can’t win games turning the ball over five times,” McCarthy said. “I don’t give a (expletive) who lines up. So that’s the part we got to get right.”

<![CDATA[How? I don’t know! Detroit Lions somehow come back to beat Texans in instant classic]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/11/how-i-dont-know-detroit-lions-somehow-come-back-to-beat-texans-in-instant-classic/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/11/how-i-dont-know-detroit-lions-somehow-come-back-to-beat-texans-in-instant-classic/Mon, 11 Nov 2024 04:45:38 +0000I don’t know how they did it, but the Detroit Lions somehow overcame five interceptions and a 16-point deficit to beat the Texans and win their seventh game in a row.

The hero was Jake Bates, who hit a 58-yard field goal to tie the game in the final minutes and then a 52-yarder to win it with zeroes on the clock.

But make no mistake: The Lions won this game because of their defense, which came up with big stops time and time again to keep the Texans within striking distance when they could have won going away.

Miserable first quarter in all 3 phases

The Lions got off to easily their worst start of the season.

It began with a turnover by Jared Goff, who tried to force a ball out to Jahmyr Gibbs in the flat, even though the play was well covered.

The ball was tipped and intercepted, giving the Texans a possession on Detroit’s 33-yard line.

The lack of a pass rush bit the Lions on that drive, as they allowed conversions on third and 10 and then third and 16 en route to an easy walk-in touchdown for Joe Mixon.

Detroit responded with a three-and-out. Jack Fox, maybe the best punter in the league, followed up with a 40-yard punt that was returned 17 yards to the the 43.

You could kind of tell it was going to be a rough night when even Fox was struggling.

Houston had no trouble marching down the field once again, completing passes of eight, eight, and 36 yards to get inside the five. But a holding penalty and a sack by James Houston forced them to settle for a field goal to go up 10-0.

Welcome back, Jamo

It looked like the Lions were going to punt for the third drive in row after a throwaway and a negative rushing play set up third and 16. But Goff stepped up and delivered a dart to Jameson Williams -- who bobbled the ball but caught it on the second attempt -- for 23 yards to keep the drive alive.

This was Williams' first game back from a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy.

Williams came up big again three plays later on third and six, catching a 13-yard dart across the middle to move the chains.

Goff took care of the next third down himself, scrambling for two yards on third and 1.

He rolled out to his right two plays later and hit Sam LaPorta for a 20-yard touchdown.

But that’s where the good news ended, at least for the first half.

Another costly turnover

The Lions' defense held the Texans to a field goal on their next possession, thanks to a couple of key plays by Alim McNeill.

But the Lions gave them the ball right back in plus territory, as the ball was knocked out of Goff’s hand on a drop back and tipped around for a second interception.

Houston started at Detroit‘s 36-yard line and drove quickly to the 11-yard line. But once again, Aaron Glenn’s group answered the call and forced a field goal attempt to minimize the damage.

Offensive struggles continue

The Lions went three-and-out once again, and the Texans took over with a chance to add to their nine-point lead before the half.

But the defense continued to keep the Lions in the game, getting a sack on first down and tackling Xavier Hutchinson for a four-yard loss on third and 21.

That gave the ball back to the offense at the two-minute warning, and with the Texans set to receive the second-half kickoff, it felt like an important possession.

But the Lions showed no life. After a pair of runs that went nowhere, Goff threw an incomplete pass to polish off yet another three-and-out.

Being on the field so much finally caught up to the defense, as it took the Texans just six plays to go 66 yards for a backbreaking touchdown.

The Lions went into the half down 23-7. They had just 99 yards of total offense before a garbage time completion seconds before the break.

Goff, who has been nearly automatic in the first half all season, was just 7-for-17 for 91 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions (one on a Hail Mary right at the half).

Signs of life

Carlton Davis made an incredible diving interception on the very first play of the third quarter to give the Lions a possession at Houston’s 31-yard line.

But Goff got picked off for the fourth time when he tried to fit a pass into LaPorta at the goal line. Officials ruled the interception was made at the 1-yard line, and the defense got a quick three-and-out to set up a possession that started at Houston’s 44.

Goff went to LaPorta once again, this time for a 37-yard gain down to the 3-yard line.

Montgomery took care of the rest, scoring on first and goal to bring the Linos within 10. He was stuffed short of the goal line on the two-point attempt, though, so the Lions remained down by two scores.

The Texans took back some momentum with a 32-yard gain on third and 8 after it looked like the Lions might force another three-and-out. But Davis came up with another incredible interception, this time in the end zone as C.J. Stroud went for the dagger to Tank Dell.

Goff’s 5th pick

Gibbs picked up 12 yards on first down, but then Goff threw an ill-advised jump ball toward Williams that was picked off for his fifth interception of the game.

A holding penalty and a sack by McNeill forced another punt, but an illegal block on the return backed the Lions up inside their own 10-yard line.

Gibbs flipped the field with a 33-yard gain on a short swing pass, but then the Lions went run for no gain, run for three yards, run for two yards to end the possession.

Somehow, Lions pull within a score

After the defense forced another three-and-out, the Lions finally put together a scoring drive to pull within three points.

The first key play was a Goff pass to Williams, who went up and caught the ball above his head and held on despite getting blasted by defenders from in front and behind.

Montgomery got the Lions inside the 10 with a big gain on a screen pass, and St. Brown did the rest, running in nearly untouched from 9 yards out.

Jake Bates ties it, then wins it

The Lions forced a punt thanks to a Josh Paschal sack, and the offense began with chunk plays of 15, nine, and 20 yards to get into Houston territory.

But a second-down pitch that went for negative-7 yards doomed the drive, and Dan Campbell called on Jake Bates to try a field goal from 58 yards out.

Bates, the last remaining NFL kicker with at least 10 field goal attempts without a miss, snuck one just inside the right upright to tie the game at 23.

Ka‘imi Fairbairn couldn’t match Bates, missing a go-ahead attempt from 58 yards and giving the Lions a short field with under two minutes to play.

Goff hit St. Brown for a key third-down conversion to set up a 52-yard game winner, and Bates snuck it just inside the left upright this time to send the Lions to their seventh-straight victory.

Standings

With the win, Detroit managed to stay a full game ahead of the Vikings in the NFC North. The Lions are also a game better than the Eagles for the top of the conference.

Next week they’ve got a date with the 2-8 Jaguars with a chance to make it eight straight victories.

<![CDATA[Hurts accounts for 4 TDs as Eagles roll past bumbling, Prescott-less Cowboys 34-6]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/11/hurts-accounts-for-4-tds-as-eagles-roll-past-bumbling-prescott-less-cowboys-34-6/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/11/hurts-accounts-for-4-tds-as-eagles-roll-past-bumbling-prescott-less-cowboys-34-6/Mon, 11 Nov 2024 00:29:44 +0000Jalen Hurts had just lost a fumble that could have put Philadelphia behind in the first half against Dallas.

An inept Cowboys offense missing quarterback Dak Prescott couldn't do anything with it, and Hurts didn't make another big mistake after that.

Hurts threw two touchdown passes and ran for a pair of scores, and the Eagles rolled to a 34-6 victory over the bumbling Cowboys on Sunday in the first game since Prescott tore a hamstring.

“Momentum is an illusion in a sense,” Hurts said. “Just treat every play like its own.”

Hurts shook off two sacks from Micah Parsons in the star pass rusher's return from a four-game absence with an ankle injury, the second sack leading to the fumble that put Dallas on the Philadelphia 6-yard line with the Cowboys trailing 7-3.

After his defense held the Cowboys to a field goal, Hurts led an 84-yard drive in the final two minutes, capped by his 14-yard touchdown to Dallas Goedert, the tight end who missed the previous three games with a hamstring injury.

The Eagles (7-2) took over first place in the NFC East with their fifth consecutive victory while defending division champion Dallas (3-6) fell to 0-4 at home in a fourth straight loss overall.

Earlier in the first half, Hurts threw an interception in the end zone with a chance to take a 14-3 lead.

“Obviously didn’t start the way we wanted it to start,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “But there’s something to be said for guys that can rebound and play a really good game after things don’t go right early on.”

Cooper Rush didn't look anything like the replacement who went 4-1 filling in for Prescott two years ago, going 13 of 23 for just 45 yards. Rush won the first four games in that 2022 stretch before throwing three interceptions in a loss at the Eagles.

Picks weren't the problem this time. Just about everything else was.

Rush lost two fumbles among five turnovers for the Cowboys, and was replaced briefly by Trey Lance early in the second half and then for good in the fourth quarter as frequent boos cascaded from the crowd. Lance threw an interception.

Prescott won't be back anytime soon, if at all this season. The franchise QB plans to seek one more medical opinion before deciding whether to have season-ending surgery on the hamstring he tore in last week's 27-21 loss to Atlanta.

“Understand that you know our quarterback’s out,” Parsons said. “Things ain’t always going to be how you expect it. And it kind of just got to be the light. It’s one of them years where, like I say, it’s challenging, but we’ve got to be the light for everybody.”

The worst offensive showing for the Cowboys at home since AT&T Stadium opened in 2009 — just 146 total yards — won't do much to quell talk about the future of coach Mike McCarthy, who is on an expiring contract.

“Yes, I believe that,” owner Jerry Jones said when asked if he will stick with McCarthy through the season. “I don’t believe we’ll make a coaching change during the season.”

The inept Dallas offense gave Hurts plenty of time to settle in after the rough start. He was 14 of 20 for 202 yards with 56 yards rushing before getting replaced by Kenny Pickett with the Eagles leading 31-6 in the fourth quarter.

Hurts finished with a passer rating of 115 to become the first quarterback in NFL history with a touchdown pass, a rushing TD and a 100-plus rating in four consecutive games. He's also the first QB with at least 10 rushing scores in four consecutive seasons, and four career seasons.

“He didn’t let one play affect the rest of his game,” Sirianni said. “That’s what winners do. That’s what Jalen Hurts does, and I’m so accustomed to him doing that because when he makes a mistake, he’s able to put it in the past. That’s not as easy as it sounds.”

Hurts opened the scoring with a tush-push TD after Rush dropped a snap and lost the fumble at the Dallas 17. Hurt had an 8-yard run to go with the toss to Goedert and a 5-yarder to Johnny Wilson.

One of the Dallas fumbles was into the Philadelphia end zone by Ezekiel Elliott when Dallas had a chance to take a lead in the second quarter. Elliott was back in the lineup after missing the trip to Atlanta because he was late for meetings.

The five takeaways for the Eagles, led by two forced fumbles and a recovery by linebacker Zack Baun, were their most in two years.

“I just thought that they played fast, they started fast,” Sirianni said. “They played great throughout the entire game. I love when we tackle well.”

Injuries

Eagles CB Darius Slay injured an ankle in the first half. ... Cowboys LB DeMarvion Overshown left with a knee injury in the second half. ... Cowboys rookie LT Tyler Guyton was inactive with a neck issue.

The incident in the first half of the Celtics’ 113-107 victory over the Bucks on Sunday caused Brown to refer to Antetokounmpo as a “child.” Antetokounmpo responded that he was only joking around.

This sequence began after Antetokounmpo’s elbow appeared to inadvertently hit Brown’s face in the second quarter, resulting in an offensive foul against the two-time MVP.

As they headed back up the floor, Antetokounmpo held out his hand toward Brown, only to pull it back over the top of his face while smiling at him. Antetokounmpo then reached out his hand again, but the Celtics’ three-time All-Star looked down without reciprocating.

The scene got plenty of attention on social media.

“Giannis is a child,” said Brown, who scored 14 points in his return after missing four games with a hip injury. “I’m just focused on helping my team get a win, and that’s what we did tonight.”

Antetokounmpo said he didn’t mean to offend anyone.

“It’s a joke,” said Antetokounmpo, who had 43 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. “We’re playing basketball. At the same time, we’ve got to have fun when we play. I think he’s an incredible player. He does whatever he can to help his team win, an extremely competitive player. We’ve played against one another many times. I think we’re always trying to joke around within the flow of the game. It’s something I do with my kids when we play around. Sometimes, I’m like, ‘Give me a high-five. Oh, you’re too slow.’ I just did it. I enjoyed it, though. It was fun.”

When Antetokounmpo was told about Brown’s postgame comment, the 6-foot-11 forward went into more detail with his response.

“This is who I am,” Antetokounmpo said. “I play the game with fun, joy. I try to surround myself around young people so I can stay young myself, try to be around my kids a lot, my nieces, and sometimes I might go out there at times on the court when I play and do stuff like that, but at the end of the day, as I said, I think he’s an incredible player. He always does the right thing to help his team win. But I’m just going to continue to be me.

“At the end of the day, if I’m called a child, so be it. I have three children of my own and I think six nieces. I take care of a lot of kids around here. Sometimes when you’re around a kid, you try to act like a kid. It’s fun. It’s fun to be around them. So I just try to go out there and have fun. Again, great player, great competitor. If I have another opportunity, I’ll do it again.”

Antetokounmpo and Brown had another episode in the fourth quarter. After Antetokounmpo drove to the basket with the game tied at 95-all, Brown received a flagrant foul for making significant impact to an airborne player in an unnecessary manner.

Antetokounmpo made the two ensuing free throws to put Milwaukee ahead with 6:52 remaining, but the Bucks didn’t score on their ensuing possession and Boston took the lead for good a minute later.

Brown was asked if that second-quarter incident was on his mind when that flagrant foul occurred.

“Naw,” Brown replied. “I was playing basketball.”

<![CDATA[Joey Logano wins Phoenix finale for 3rd NASCAR Cup championship in 1-2 finish for Team Penske]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/joey-logano-wins-phoenix-finale-for-3rd-nascar-cup-championship-in-1-2-finish-for-team-penske/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/joey-logano-wins-phoenix-finale-for-3rd-nascar-cup-championship-in-1-2-finish-for-team-penske/Sun, 10 Nov 2024 23:52:34 +0000Eliminated from the playoffs at the end of the second round, Joey Logano received a second chance when another competitor was disqualified.

He pounced on the opportunity.

Logano was added to the round of eight following Alex Bowman's disqualification and immediately went to Las Vegas Motor Speedway to win the third-round opener. It made Logano the first driver locked into Sunday's winner-take-all finale at Phoenix Raceway with three weeks to prepare his Ford for the title run.

He capitalized with his his third NACAR Cup Series championship, using a near-flawless drive to hold off teammate Ryan Blaney and give Team Penske its third major motorsports title in less than a month and third consecutive NASCAR title.

Logano actually called his shot after qualifying second Saturday when he confidently acknowledged it was his Cup Series title to lose.

“Yeah, I do. I feel like our car is strong. We got them down now,” Logano boasted. “We just have to put our foot on their throats. We feel pretty strong about our team, and these type of pressure situations we feel really solid about as far as our team in these moments.”

It may not have been how boss Roger Penske would have phrased it, but it showed the team owner how relentless his team leader can be.

“I might have used different words, but that’s OK," Penske said, “when you win, you can say whatever you want, I guess.”

Logano held off Blaney over the final 20 laps to beat him for the Cup series title by 0.330 seconds. Blaney was trying to become the first back-to-back champion since Jimmie Johnson won five straight from 2006 to 2010.

Instead, Logano became the 10th driver in NASCAR history to win three or more championships. Kyle Busch is the only other active driver with multiple titles.

“I love the playoffs, I love it man,” Logano said. “What a team, what a Penske battle there at the end. Three of them? That's truly special."

It was the first time in Team Penske history the organization finished 1-2 in the championship. And, it came after Penske's sports car team in IMSA won the title last month and his World Endurance Championship team won the title last weekend in Bahrain.

Roger Penske said he worried in the closing laps his two drivers would crash into each other, ending the title hopes for both. He also praised longtime sponsor Shell-Pennzoil, which was on Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden’s car for his victory in May for Penske.

Penske also deferred taking too much of the credit for the team success.

“It’s all about the people,” Penske said. “My name might be on the door, but it’s all about the people who make the difference and we sure have them on this team.”

Blaney was exhausted after the race, and despite his disappointment was thrilled for the Penske organization.

“At least a Penske car won it,” Blaney said. “They put together a great playoffs, and we’re happy. If we’re going to race somebody, I’m happy it was him for the championship, and happy to be 1-2 for Roger, three in a row for Roger, super amazing, and Ford.”

Penske and Ford have won three consecutive Cup Series championships. Logano won in 2022 and Blaney won last year.

“One-two for Team Penske, three championships in a row, can't be more proud of this team,” Logano said. “I don’t know if I’m the best driver but I’ve got the best team. And together, we’re very well-rounded and can show up when it matters the most.”

The finale was winner-take-all to the highest finisher between Logano, Blaney, William Byron in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports and Tyler Reddick of the 23XI Racing team owned by NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin.

Byron finished third in the race and Reddick was sixth. It was Byron's second consecutive appearance in the finale, first for Reddick.

“Makes you hungrier, but also just more experience in what it takes,” said Byron, the Daytona 500 winner. “I feel like this style of track has been tough on us, and we made a lot of strides this year, but still more to go. If we can just kind of inch up on this style of track, I know we’re so good at all the other ones, and we can put it all together.”

Reddick, who had been subdued all week compared to his fellow title contenders, didn't lead a lap and had Jordan pacing behind the pit wall much of the race.

“Michael was just proud of the effort of our team all year long,” Reddick said. “Put up a good fight. We didn't make any mistakes that took ourselves out of it. We fought as hard as we could.”

The four title contenders finished in the top six, with Reddick behind Kyle Larson of Hendrick and Christopher Bell, who led a race-high 143 laps after he was disqualified from the finale last week at Martinsville for a safety violation. Byron took his spot instead, and Bell insisted he had been cheated out of the chance to race for the title.

Logano, a 34-year-old from Connecticut, led 107 laps in the dominating win that Blaney made closer than expected in the final laps.

But, his very presence in the final four was controversial as Logano was eliminated from the playoffs after the second round. He was reinstated before Las Vegas, where he won to give the No. 22 team three weeks to prepare for Phoenix.

“Our team is better under pressure,” Logano said. “The race started in Vegas for us. The amount of work and effort that went into building this race car right here, the amount of time, I don’t think anyone works harder than us. We were up at 6 in the morning this morning going over stuff. The guys just want it bad and I’m glad we delivered."

<![CDATA[Moody shrugs off 3 missed FGs to kick 49ers past Buccaneers 23-20 in McCaffrey's season debut]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/moody-shrugs-off-3-missed-fgs-to-kick-49ers-past-buccaneers-23-20-in-mccaffreys-season-debut/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/moody-shrugs-off-3-missed-fgs-to-kick-49ers-past-buccaneers-23-20-in-mccaffreys-season-debut/Sun, 10 Nov 2024 21:47:20 +0000Jake Moody said his confidence never wavered. Not even after a frustrated teammate confronted him on the sideline.

The usually reliable San Francisco kicker made up for missing three earlier field goals by booting a 44-yarder as time expired Sunday to give the 49ers a 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in running back Christian McCaffrey's season debut.

“I really, really wanted a chance to redeem myself," said Moody, who in his first game back after being sidelined three weeks with a sprained ankle, also kicked field goals of 28 and 33 yards for the defending NFC champion 49ers (5-4), who have won consecutive games for the first time this season.

“I felt really confident, really good going that direction. It was the same exact spot as the previous one,” Moody said. “I saw what happened with the previous one and was able to make an adjustment.”

Moody, who was 13 of 14 entering Sunday, delivered the winner after missing wide left from 49 and 50 yards and then wide right on a 44-yard attempt that would have given San Francisco a six-point lead with 3:09 remaining.

TV cameras caught 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel exchanging words and appearing to shove long snapper Taybor Pepper when the frustrated wide receiver approached Moody on the sideline after the third miss.

Moody shrugged off the sideline incident involving Samuel. who had five catches for 62 yards.

“It's an emotional game. Stuff like that happens all the time," Moody said, adding he’s not looking for an apology from Samuel. "You just move past it. We won, so that's all that matters.

“Like I said, heat of the moment, it happens. I do have to make those kicks at the end of the day. That's all I'm focused on.”

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said he didn’t see what happened.

“Guys are frustrated, something probably happened ... brothers scuffle a little bit. I didn’t see any of it, so I don’t know how bad it was," Shanahan said. "It’s something I’m not too worried about. We’ll fix it, if it hasn’t been fixed already. We’ll fix it on the plane and go back to loving each other (Monday).”

McCaffrey returned to practice last Monday after being sidelined since early September due to Achilles tendinitis. He carried for 5 yards on the first play and game and finished with 39 yards rushing on 13 attempts. The 2023 AP Offensive Player of the Year also had six receptions for 68 yards.

Baker Mayfield led a drive to set up a tying field goal for Tampa Bay (4-6) with help from three straight personal foul penalties — setting the stage for Moody to win it for the 49ers. Mayfield finished 18 of 29 passing for 116 yards and one TD for the Bucs, who have lost four in a row.

It was the second straight week Tampa Bay lost on the final play of the game. They forced overtime at Kansas City the previous game, then lost 36-30 when Patrick Mahomes led the Super Bowl champion Chiefs to a touchdown on the first possession of OT.

“We have to finish ballgames,” Bucs coach Todd Bowles said. “There's nothing wrong with how hard we're playing and how tough we're playing, but we have to finish games. ... We're making too many mistakes at the end.”

Brock Purdy threw for 353 yards without an interception, and had touchdowns of 46 yards to rookie Ricky Pearsall — the wide receiver's first NFL score — and 11 yards to George Kittle. He moved his team into position for the winning field goal with two completions to Jauan Jennings and two more to Pearsall.

Pearsall sat out the first six games after being shot in the chest after an autograph session in downtown San Francisco on Aug. 31. On his touchdown, he caught a pass over the middle from Purdy, accelerated toward the left sideline where he outran the pursuit until safety Antoine Winfield Jr. closed in and nearly brought him down as the receiver extended the ball over the goal line.

The Bucs wiped out a 10-0 deficit with help from 49ers punt returner Jacob Cowing, whose third-quarter muff was recovered at San Francisco's 21 to set up Tampa Bay's first TD. Four plays later, Mayfield threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Rachaad White that made it 10-10.

Rookie Bucky Irving scored on 12-yard run that put Tampa Bay ahead 17-13 early in the fourth quarter. Purdy answered with his TD throw to Kittle to put the 49ers back in front with just over seven minutes left.

“They are a good team that’s lost some games, some close ones, and it was a day before their bye week, so we knew we were going to get their best shot,” Shanahan said. “We had some opportunities to run away with it. We didn’t. That was on us.”

Injuries

49ers: DE Nick Bosa played after being listed as questionable after hurting his hip in practice.

Buccaneers: LT Tristan Wirfs limped off with a right knee injury in the second quarter and did not return. CB Zyon McCollum (hamstring) and LB Chris Braswell (oblique) departed in the second half.

<![CDATA[Russell Wilson's TD pass to Mike Williams lifts the Steelers over the Commanders 28-27]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/russell-wilsons-td-pass-to-mike-williams-lifts-the-steelers-over-the-commanders-28-27/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/russell-wilsons-td-pass-to-mike-williams-lifts-the-steelers-over-the-commanders-28-27/Sun, 10 Nov 2024 21:35:31 +0000Anyone who questioned Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's switch to Russell Wilson from Justin Fields might be reconsidering the wisdom of the move right about now. Wilson is looking like the guy who was a star earlier in his career — especially with those 50-50 deep balls he keeps connecting on.

Wilson shook off his first interception in 11 months and hit trade-deadline pickup Mike Williams for a 32-yard touchdown with less than 2 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter for the quarterback's third scoring throw Sunday, lifting the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 28-27 comeback victory over Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.

“I’ve seen it a few times on highlights,” Tomlin said of Wilson's ability to complete the big play, something that helped the QB win one Super Bowl and reach another with the Seattle Seahawks. “It’s a little better in person. Believe me.”

Coming off a bye, the AFC North-leading Steelers (7-2) won their fourth game in a row, including all three since Wilson took over from Fields. Wilson's stats were not the prettiest on Sunday, but he got the job done: 14 for 28 for 195 yards, the three TDs and the one pick.

“It was a big-time catch by Mike. I just tried to give him a chance, let him do his thing,” Wilson said about Williams, acquired last week from the New York Jets. “You visualize those moments and what could happen and just trusting guys. That was all Big Mike there.”

George Pickens delivered an acrobatic catch in the end zone on a 16-yarder in the first quarter, and tight end Pat Freiermuth scored on a pass from 3 yards out in the second, much to the delight of the thousands of Terrible Towel-twirling Steelers fans in the stands.

Washington (7-3) led 24-14 but couldn't hold on as it attempted to get to 8-2 overall for the first time since 1986 and 5-0 at home for the first time since 1991, when the team went on to win the Super Bowl under coach Joe Gibbs.

“Too many small mistakes,” defensive end Clelin Ferrell said.

Daniels, the No. 2 overall draft pick who has starred for first-year coach Dan Quinn, was 17 for 34 for 202 yards without a touchdown or interception. He also had three carries for 5 yards, his lowest output as a pro, while still dealing with a rib injury that he described as “still there, but it's nothing that's holding me back.”

As for watching his counterpart Wilson, Daniels observed: “He made plays when the plays needed to be made.”

Never more so than on the over-the-shoulder toss to Williams — his only catch of the game — to turn a six-point deficit into a one-point lead for the visitors.

Pickens' take on what Wilson showed there?

“That’s one of his biggest components of his game: trusting his receivers,” Pickens said.

After that play, Daniels moved Washington to midfield. On fourth-and-9 with less than 1 1/2 minutes to go, Daniels connected with Zach Ertz, but the catch was ruled just short of a first down; until then, the Commanders were 11 for 11 on fourth down this season.

On the ensuing possession, Pittsburgh faced a fourth-and-1 at Washington's 49 with 1:02 on the clock and decided to line up as if to go for it. But Wilson's hard count got rookie defensive lineman Johnny Newton to jump too soon, and the penalty allowed the Steelers to keep the ball and run out the clock.

This was far from a perfect performance by Pittsburgh, though.

Commanders safety Jeremy Chinn picked off Wilson late in the third quarter and recovered Jaylen Warren's fumble at the 1-yard line in the fourth.

The worst turnover by the Steelers had to be the fake punt deep in its own territory in the first quarter. The snap went to up-back Miles Killebrew, who threw to a wide-open James Pierre, but he dropped the ball. That gave Washington possession at Pittsburgh's 15, and three plays later, Austin Ekeler scored the first of his two short touchdowns runs.

“That is me. I own that. I’ll do it again,” Tomlin said. “But we didn’t execute it, so it was a bad idea.”

Injuries

Steelers: LB Alex Highsmith (ankle) and CB Donte Jackson (hamstring) got hurt in the second half.

Commanders: C Tyler Biadasz (ankle) left the game briefly but returned. ... RT Andrew Wylie (shoulder) was a late scratch, while newly acquired CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring), RB Brian Robinson Jr. (hamstring) and K Austin Seibert (hip) sat out, as expected. ... Seibert's replacement, Zane Gonzalez, made two field goals.

<![CDATA[Arsenal's winless run goes on after 1-1 draw with Chelsea and Man United beats Leicester 3-0]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/man-united-beats-leicester-3-0-in-its-final-game-before-ruben-amorim-takes-charge/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/man-united-beats-leicester-3-0-in-its-final-game-before-ruben-amorim-takes-charge/Sun, 10 Nov 2024 16:18:33 +0000Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge took another hit on Sunday after a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

It’s now four games without a win in the league for Mikel Arteta’s team, which is nine points behind leader Liverpool.

While a point saw Arsenal climb up to fourth in the standings, its winless run has seen a gap open up at the top. Chelsea is third, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference.

Gabriel Martinelli had fired Arsenal in front in the 60th minute at Stamford Bridge, but Pedro Neto equalized 10 minutes later.

“It’s about transforming these performances into victories,” Arteta said afterward.

Arsenal was runner-up to Manchester City in each of the last two seasons and expected to be the closest rival to the defending champion again.

Instead it is Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, that has powered ahead at the start of the campaign and taken advantage of the faltering form of both City and Arsenal. City is five points back in second after two-straight losses in the league.

“It is a long season — long way to go. We had a tough period in December last season and came back,” Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard told Sky Sports, as reported by the BBC. Odegaard was making his first start since sustaining ankle ligament damage in September. “We know the quality and mentality we have and we just have to keep going.”

Behind the top two the league is bunching up.

Just four points separate Chelsea and 13th-place Manchester United after 11 rounds of the season.

Injury concerns

Declan Rice went into the match with a broken toe and was taken off in the 71st, while Bukayo Saka was substituted 10 minutes later, placing doubts over whether they will be available for England's Nation League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

"I don’t know whether to expect them to be fit, because if not they don’t come off,” Arteta said.

New era

Over to you Ruben Amorim.

United’s incoming head coach will take over a team on the up after a 3-0 win against Leicester made it four games unbeaten in all competitions under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Amorim officially starts on Monday after serving out his notice period at Sporting Lisbon — where his last game in charge Sunday was a 4-2 win at Braga in the Portuguese league — and comes into a club that looks to be in a much healthier position than it was when Erik ten Hag was fired at the end of last month.

“We said ‘Let’s make the most of these four games, get the maximum out of it,’ and I think we did an okay job,” Van Nistelrooy said. ”I really enjoyed it, it’s been a short but amazing period.”

Van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s former assistant and an iconic striker for the club in his playing days, has secured three wins and a draw during his four-game temporary reign.

Now he is seeking clarity from United’s hierarchy about his own future once Amorim takes over.

“I expect to hear today or tomorrow from them,” he said.

On his 250th appearance for the club Bruno Fernandes scored with a brilliant curling shot from the edge of the area in the 17th minute at Old Trafford.

His effort in the 38th then saw Victor Kristiansen accidentally divert the ball past Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to double United’s lead before the break.

Substitute Alejandro Garnacho scored an even more spectacular goal than Fernandes’ in the 82nd when sweeping the ball into the top corner from outside the box. Fernandes said later that the Argentina international didn’t fully celebrate the goal because he believes some fans have lost faith in him.

Newcastle fights back

Nottingham Forest’s rise has been one of the stories of the season, but it missed the chance to close the gap on Manchester City in second after falling 3-1 to Newcastle.

City’s 2-1 loss against Brighton on Saturday meant Forest could have moved to within a point of Pep Guardiola’s team and it got off to an ideal start through Murillo’s goal in the 21st at the City Ground.

But second-half goals from Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes completed eighth-place Newcastle’s comeback.

Defeat saw Forest drop from third to fifth on goal difference.

Ipswich wins

Ipswich won for the first time in the league this season with a 2-1 victory at Tottenham that saw it climb out of the relegation zone.

It was promoted Ipswich's first Premier League win in 22 years.

Ipswich was the only top-flight team without a win heading into Sunday and led 2-0 at halftime against a Spurs side that could have moved into the top four with victory.

Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap put Ipswich in control at that break. Rodrigo Bentancur pulled one back for Tottenham, but couldn’t prevent Ange Postecoglou’s team falling to a fifth league loss this season.

<![CDATA[Chiefs block Broncos' potential winner as time expires, hold on for 16-14 win to remain perfect]]>https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/chiefs-block-broncos-potential-winner-as-time-expires-hold-on-for-16-14-win-to-remain-perfect/https://www.clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/11/10/chiefs-block-broncos-potential-winner-as-time-expires-hold-on-for-16-14-win-to-remain-perfect/Sun, 10 Nov 2024 21:09:36 +0000The Chiefs have won just about every way imaginable during a perfect 15-game run that dates to last season: Patrick Mahomes leading last-second touchdown drives, their defense making a stand, and Harrison Butker kicking game-winning field goals.

They added a walk-off block to the list against the Broncos on Sunday.

Leo Chenal was part of a red wave that crashed through the center of the Denver field goal unit, and the Chiefs linebacker got his hand on Wil Lutz's 35-yard attempt as time expired, allowing Kansas City to escape with a 16-14 victory.

“It's a complete shock, you know? Not much I can say about it," Chenal said. “I was really praying for something to happen. That moment is so heavy. There's a second on the clock, they're going to kick a field goal and you feel the weight of the moment.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated they took advantage of something they had seen in the Broncos' field-goal operation.

“We did,” Reid said, “but it's also something we work on like crazy. It normally doesn't work quite like that one.”

The Chiefs had taken the lead on Butker's field goal with 5:57 remaining, but Bo Nix and the Broncos converted a trio of third downs while marching right back down the field. They proceeded to set up Lutz for the winner, but Chenal came up the middle amid a big push by the Kansas City defensive line to get his hand on the kick.

The ball squibbed away toward the Denver sideline as the Chiefs rushed onto the field to celebrate.

“I felt like we outplayed them but we didn't finish,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said. “That one will take a while. It'll sting.”

Mahomes finished with 266 yards passing and a touchdown for the Chiefs, who became only the fifth Super Bowl champion to win its first nine games the next season. That also matches the best start to a season in franchise history, and their 15-game win streak dating to last season is the longest in the NFL since the Packers won 19 in a row from 2010-11.

Travis Kelce had eight catches for 64 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City. DeAndre Hopkins caught four passes for 56 yards, and Kareem Hunt was held to 35 yards rushing but also caught seven passes for 65 yards.

“Any way you win is good in this league,” Mahomes said. “You live for these moments. When you grow up playing football, you live for the walk-off whatever-it-is. And I'm glad we get to experience it together.”

Nix finished with 215 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Broncos (5-5). Courtland Sutton had six catches for 60 yards and a score. And their 13-yard hookup on third-and-6 with 1:45 left is what gave Denver a chance to kick as time expired.

“They just made one extra play. When we thought it was in our hands, it wasn't,” Nix said. “It's tough. And again, it's two good football teams out there playing against each other, and one day it will go our way.”

The Broncos stunned the Chiefs a year ago, forcing five turnovers in a 21-9 win at Denver that ended a 16-game losing streak in the series. And they clearly had the same intention in mind as the AFC West rivals met again Sunday.

Their defense harassed Mahomes throughout the first half, particularly when an injury to Wanya Morris forced rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia into the game. And the Broncos capitalized on offense with two long scoring drives, the first ending with Nix finding Devaughn Vele wide open and the second with Sutton's 32-yard TD catch for a 14-3 lead.

It was Mahomes who got the Chiefs on track, going 7 for 7 for 62 yards on the ensuing drive. When it looked as if it had stalled at the Denver 2, Reid went against his conservative nature on fourth down, and Mahomes hit Kelce for the score.

The Chiefs still trailed 14-10 at the break, meaning they had Denver right where they wanted them.

Unflappable in winning its last eight games when trailing in the second half, Kansas City closed within 14-13 on Butker's chip-shot field goal late in the third quarter. The Chiefs defense then forced back-to-back punts, and Mahomes and the offense drove to the Denver 2, where Butker added the go-ahead kick with just under six minutes remaining.

Plenty of time for the Broncos to drive down the field. Not enough time for them to win.

“I told our team I was proud of the way they fought. I thought we outplayed them," Payton said. “But nonetheless, you have to beat a champion and we weren't able to do it, so obviously gut-wrenching.”

Swift returns

Taylor Swift was back at Arrowhead Stadium to watch Kelce and the Chiefs just six days after turning up to see their win over Tampa Bay on Monday night. The pop superstar resumes her Eras Tour on Thursday night at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Injuries

Chiefs: Morris hurt his knee in the first half but returned early in the fourth quarter.
